Our Contribution To The 17 Sustainable Development Goals

At the CCH – Congress Center Hamburg we are committed to doing business in a responsible and sustainable manner. We base this commitment on the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals to reconcile our business interests with ecological and social causes. We feel it is our responsibility to follow these principles of sustainable operations in every respect, and we consider doing so as a fundamental element of our corporate culture.

We have identified seven SDGs to which we can make a particular contribution based on our core business. The company-specific measures of the Messe and the CCH are highlighted separately.

1 NO POVERTY
2 ZERO HUNGER
3 GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
5 GENDER EQUALITY

7 AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY
10 REDUCED INEQUALITIES
14 LIFE BELOW WATER
15 LIFE ON LAND
17 PARTNERSHIPS

DGNB Certification

The CCH – Congress Center Hamburg is the first, and thus far, the only existing German convention center to earn Gold certification in the Revitalization category from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). This is the highest DGNB sustainability certification level awarded to an existing convention building to date. Compared to constructing a completely new building, the CO2 emissions from the production processes for the modernization and redesign of the new CCH were reduced by approximately 50 percent. This amounted to about 25,000 tons of CO2 saved in production.

Corporate Social Responsibility

At Hamburg Messe und Congress, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) stands for responsible, sustainable business and includes not only economic but also ecological and social aspects.

Sustainability Checklist for the event industry

Event organizers who would like some extra guidance on event sustainability can use the “Sustainability Checklist for the event industry” as a convenient entry-level method to take the first steps into this complex topic. The checklist not only provides a means to review one’s own sustainable behavior but also that of partners and service providers. The checklist originates from the “Sustainable Event Solutions” platforms.

Net Zero Carbon Events

Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH has joined the "Net Zero Carbon Events" initiative as a signatory. The initiative stands for a worldwide cooperation of the event industry to meet the challenges of the global climate crisis and to overcome them together. In this way, the trade fair and congress industry is making it clear that it will actively collaborate on solutions and new concepts. The initiative was officially presented at the World Climate Summit in Glasgow (COP26) in November 2021.

Goals of the initiative

"Net Zero Carbon Events" aims to bring together a broad range of stakeholders to jointly:

  • communicate the event industry’s commitment to combating climate change and the pursuit of "Net Zero."
  • develop methods to measure the industry's direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions.
  • create an industry-wide roadmap for Net Zero by 2050 and emissions reductions by 2030.
  • encourage collaboration with suppliers and customers, with the goal of joint alignment and definition of common approaches.
  • define mechanisms for reporting progress and sharing best practices.

To this end, the initiative is initially developing a roadmap by the end of 2022 in a participatory process that will provide companies in the events industry with a framework for action from which they can derive their own specific programs in each case.
